VISA APPLICATION – REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
All visa applicants are required to submit the following documents to the Embassy’s address after submitting their visa application through the eVisa system:
- Original passport of the applicant, with a minimum validity of six months.
- Valid New Zealand residence permit/document (for holders of passports other than New Zealand passports).
- One recent photograph, measuring 3 × 4 cm.
- Proof of payment of the visa issuance fee and travel insurance fee.
- One self-addressed registered return courier bag (Self Return Bag) for the return of the applicant’s documents.
Important Note:
Where deemed necessary by the Embassy, the applicant will be required to attend the Embassy in person.
IMPORTANT
- Providing any false or inaccurate information, or entering a telephone number, residential address, or email address belonging to a person other than the applicant in the visa application form, will result in the rejection of the visa application.
- In accordance with the applicable visa regulations, in the event that a visa application is rejected, any fees paid will under no circumstances be refundable.
Instructions for Submitting an Iranian Visa Application
To begin your application, please follow the steps below:

After submitting your application, you will receive a Visa Submission Notice by email.
Please note:
- If any false or inaccurate information or personal details are provided, the applicant’s visa application will be immediately rejected.

- Submit the required documents
Please send all the required documents listed below, together with a copy of the visa fee payment receipt, to the following address:
151 Te Anau Road, Hataitai, Wellington 6021
- In the event that the applicant’s visa application is refused, the visa fee will not be refunded.
- You do not need to visit the Embassy in person to submit your documents. Once your documents have been received by post, if the Embassy determines that the applicant’s personal attendance is required, you will be notified accordingly.

Important: In the event that the visa application is refused, the visa application fee and travel insurance fee are non-refundable and non-transferable to another person. Personal cheques are not accepted.
Visa Application Result
The result of your visa application, whether an Electronic Visa (E-Visa) is issued or the application is refused (Visa Refusal), will be sent to the email address provided in your online application.
You are advised to check both your Inbox and your Spam/Junk folder regularly.
Required Documents for an Islamic Republic of Iran Visa Application
- The applicant’s original passport, valid for at least six months.
- Valid New Zealand residency/visa documentation for applicants holding a passport other than a New Zealand passport.
- One recent passport-size photograph, 3 × 4 cm.
- Proof of payment of the visa issuance fee and travel insurance fee.
According to visa regulations, if the visa application is refused, any fees paid will under no circumstances be refundable.
- One self-return registered courier bag (Self Return Bag) for the return of the applicant’s documents.
In cases where the Embassy considers it necessary, the applicant may be required to attend the Embassy in person.
Recommendation 1 – Travel Insurance
Travel insurance will be issued at the same time as the visa. The applicant only needs to pay the insurance fee separately when paying the visa fee. No additional action is required regarding the insurance.
The travel insurance fee is NZD 20.
Recommendation 2 – Non-Refundable Fees
Under the applicable regulations, if the visa application is refused, the amounts paid for the visa fee and travel insurance will not be refunded to the applicant.
Important Information Regarding Visa Applications
- Selecting the Embassy
When completing the electronic visa application form, make sure that you select the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Wellington as the place where your visa issuance notification will be processed/received.
Selecting the wrong location may cause delays in the processing of your visa application.
- Accuracy of Information
All information provided must be complete and accurate.
Providing any false, misleading, or incomplete information may result in the rejection of the visa application.
- Tourist Visa
At present, tourist visas are issued with a 30-day period of stay and are valid for 45 days from the date of issuance.
This means that from the date the visa is issued by the Embassy, the applicant has a maximum of 45 days to enter Iran. After entering Iran, the applicant may stay in Iran for up to 30 days.
It is recommended that applicants submit their documents for visa issuance when less than one month remains before their intended travel date.
- Family Visa
A Family Visa is issued to children and spouses of Iranian women, provided that their marriage and/or the children’s names have been officially registered in the relevant Shenasnameh (Iranian civil status/family record).
Applicants must upload images of the relevant pages of the Iranian mother’s/wife’s Shenasnameh and the child’s Shenasnameh in the appropriate section of the electronic visa application.
Copies of these documents must then be sent to the Embassy together with the other required documents listed below.
If the marriage has not been registered in the Iranian woman’s Shenasnameh, or the children’s names have not been entered in the mother’s Shenasnameh, the applicant should apply for a Family Visit
Visa or an Entry Visa.
- Family Visit Visa
Foreign nationals who intend to travel to Iran to visit their Iranian relatives may apply for a Family Visit Visa.
When submitting the application, applicants must upload documents proving their family relationship and provide the relevant information and National ID number of the Iranian host.
After approval has been obtained, the documents listed below under Required Documents must be sent to the Embassy for visa issuance.
This type of visa is processed in Iran.
- Non-New Zealand Passport Holders
Applicants holding passports other than New Zealand passports must have a valid New Zealand visa or immigration status.
- Iranian Citizens with Dual Nationality
Iranian citizens who also hold the nationality of another country cannot apply for an Iranian visa.
They must enter Iran using their Iranian passport and Iranian travel documentation.
- Visa Fees for All Applicants
All visa applicants, including children, must pay the applicable visa fee and travel insurance fee in accordance with the visa fee schedule.
Visa and travel insurance fees are non-refundable.
- False Documents or Information
Submitting fraudulent documents or providing false information in order to obtain a visa will result in the rejection of the visa application and may result in a ban on entering Iran.
If fraudulent documents or false information are discovered, even after a visa has been issued, Iranian border authorities may prevent the applicant from travelling to or entering Iran.
- Applicants Under 18
Applicants under the age of 18 must provide the following additional documents:
- A copy of the applicant’s Shenasnameh.
- A copy of the father’s passport.
- An official written consent from the father for children travelling with their mother or another adult.
- Family Visa – Required Shenasnameh Pages
A Family Visa may be issued to children and spouses of Iranian women whose marriage has been officially registered and whose children’s names have been registered in the relevant Shenasnameh.
These applicants must upload images of the following pages of the Iranian mother’s Shenasnameh:
- First page
- Page showing the spouse/marriage registration
- Page showing the names of the children
These documents must be uploaded in the relevant section of the electronic visa application form.
- Passport Holders of the USA, UK and Canada
Applicants holding passports from the United States, United Kingdom, or Canada must obtain a Visa Reference Number / Visa Grant Notice from Iran.
This visa reference number may be obtained through travel agencies in Iran.
- Travel Insurance Is Mandatory
All holders of Iranian travel visas must have travel insurance covering accidents and emergencies for the entire duration of their stay in Iran.
The required insurance must be issued by an authorised insurance company that has an office in Iran.
The insurance policy must include:
- The full name of the visa holder, exactly as it appears on the travel document;
- The period of stay in Iran;
- The insurance expiry date.
A copy of the travel insurance policy must be submitted together with the other required documents for visa issuance.
Applicants should also carry their travel insurance document when entering Iran and present it to border officials if requested.
- Electronic Visa
All visas are issued electronically and will be sent to the email address provided by the applicant during the online application process.
Please make sure that you provide your personal email address in the online application form and regularly check both your Inbox and Spam folders.
You are advised to keep a copy of your electronic visa in a safe place.
When entering and leaving Iran, you must present a printed copy of your Electronic Visa (E-Visa) to the Immigration Police of the Islamic Republic of Iran at the border.
- Visa Expiry Date
Applicants are strongly advised to pay close attention to the visa expiry date.
The validity period of a visa for travel to Iran is generally three months. After the visa expires, you will not be permitted to enter Iran.
The permitted period of stay is calculated from the date of each entry into Iran.
If you intend to travel to Iran within the next three months, you should apply for your visa
accordingly. Otherwise, your visa may expire before your intended travel date.
- Additional Processing
The Embassy reserves the right to conduct additional checks and inquiries regarding your visa application. This may result in the visa processing time being longer than expected.
Applicants should therefore take this into consideration when making flight reservations.
Providing a flight ticket or proof of ticket purchase is not mandatory. The Embassy accepts no responsibility for flight tickets that may subsequently need to be cancelled or have their dates changed.
- Selecting the Correct Visa Type
Please take particular care when selecting the type of visa you are applying for.
If you do not meet the requirements for the visa category you have selected, your application may be rejected, and the visa fee will not be refunded.
- New Zealand Passport Holders
New Zealand passport holders may travel to Iran and obtain a Visa on Arrival at the airport.
